21 pilgrims killed in road accident in AP, PM condole
Rajahmundry (AP): A group of 21 pilgrims, including six children, were killed when the vehicle they were travelling in fell off a bridge here early today, while they were returning after visiting Tirupati Temple, police said.
The victims include nine women, six men and six children, they said, adding, a young boy survived the accident.
Citing preliminary information, a police official at the spot said, “a group of people were returning from Tirupati after visiting the temple. The vehicle driver appeared to have lost control and hit a wall of the bridge and fell off into Gaodavari River.”
However, the water-level at the point of accident was very shallow, he said.
All the deceased belonged to Achyutapuram area, near Visakhapatnam.
The incident is understood to have happened in the wee hours and police received information at about 5 AM. The relatives of the deceased have been informed, police said
AP mishap: PM condoles loss of lives
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today condoled the death of 22 pilgrims, including seven children, in a road mishap in Andhra Pradesh, terming the incident “saddening and unfortunate”.
The pilgrims’ group, which was returning from a visit to Tirupati temple, met with tragedy in the early hours as the vehicle they were travelling in fell off a bridge at Dowleswaram near Rajahmundry.
“Loss of lives due to a bus accident in East Godavari district, Andhra Pradesh is saddening and unfortunate. My deepest condolences,” the Prime Minister said.
Among the deceased are seven children, eight women and seven men, including the driver of the vehicle, who was also its owner, he added. The pilgrims hailed from Achyutapuram near Visakhapatnam.
A boy, who sustained injuries, is the lone survivor of the mishap. He is undergoing treatment at a hospital.
As per preliminary information, the driver of the vehicle appeared to have lost control and it crashed through the railing of the bridge.
