302 polluted stretches on 275 rivers in the country: Minister

New Delhi:  The Centre has identified 302 polluted stretches on 275 rivers in the country, Rajya Sabha was informed today.

In his reply to a question, Minister of State for Water Resources Sanwar Lal Jat said the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has identified 302 polluted stretches on 275 rivers in the year 2014.

As per the data furnished by the Minister, Maharashtra tops the list of number of polluted river stretches based on Use Based Quality Criteria by CPCB with 49, which is followed by Assam and Madhya Pradesh by 28 and 21, respectively.

Responding to another question, the minister said that CPCB has estimated the sewage generation for urban population in India at 61,951 million litres per day for the year 2015.
