AFC team to inspect Goa stadia for 2016 U-16 championship
Panaji: The team of Asian Football Confederation (AFC) would arrive in Goa on September 23 to inspect the stadia for the proposed U-16 AFC Championship, which is scheduled next year, a senior official said here today.
The state is getting ready for the U-16 AFC championship, final rounds of the tournament would be held in the state in September-October 2016.
“The AFC team led by competition manager Jinho Yu would be inspecting the stadia, hotels and other facilities between September 23 and 25,” Savio Messias, All India Football Federation (AIFF) official, told PTI.
He said the committee will inspect Jawaharlal Nehru (PJN) Stadium at Fatorda, Tilak Maidan at Vasco, Athletic Stadium at Bambolim along with other stadia which would be used for practice by the teams during the event.
The delegation would address a press conference on September 25, in which they are likely to announce whether the facilities are up to the mark, Messias said.
The AFC team will also inspect stadia at BITS Pilani, Utorda, Nagoa, Cansaulim, Raia, Benaulim, Navleim, Cuncolim and Assolna which are listed to be used as a practice grounds.
Sports Authority of Goa’s Executive Director Sandip Jacques said the facilities at Bambolim and Vasco stadia would be upgraded, while the existing infrastructure at PNJ stadium is adequate to the host AFC cup.
Jacques said the SAG has already submitted Rs 14 crore proposal for upgradation of PJN stadium as it would be a main venue for U-17 FIFA World Cup, scheduled to be held in 2017.
“Once the ISL season ends, we will be taking up the upgradation so that the facilities are also ready before AFC Cup,” he said.
The stadium at Fatorda (PJN) will have to have additional two dressing rooms, he said. The floodlights also needs to be of 2,000w high lumen flux capacity.
