Barge sinks in ocean near Redi, one missing
A barge transporting minerals, to load on ship which was anchored in ocean near Redi, was suddenly broken in to two pieces
Vengurle: A barge transporting minerals, to load on ship which was anchored in an ocean near Redi, was suddenly broken in to two pieces. One of the six Seamen on barge, Mantu Kumar Sinha (24) from Jharkhand, is missing in the mishap which took place on Saturday morning. He was not found till the evening but rest five seamen swam towards another barge and managed to reach at shore.
Currently, export-import of minerals is taking place in full swing at Redi port. Barges are used to transport goods from port to ships that enter for the purpose of export. Presently, 20 to 25 barges are functional here.
A sunken, IV Cap Goan barge was carrying 750 mt tons minerals from port to goods carrier ship, Tentra, at around 3.30 am. But the mishap took place while loading goods in ship.
The seamen on barge include Master Patitkumar Samal (28) from Odisha, Drvier Mohammad Mohattin (28), Sailor Asif Rehman (24), Sailor Rahul Malik (22) from West Bengal, Oilman Dayanand Diyasen (30) from Karwar, Karnataka, and Seaman Mantu Kumar Sinha (24).
They were routinely loading goods in ship when two huge waves created a hollow space which lifted the barge up and submerged it. All the six men on it fell into the ocean before understanding breaking of the barge. Men boarded on following barge noticed them and came forward to rescue. They successfully saved five men when sixth was still missing.
