Vegetable production on sewage water near railway tracks!
Mumbai: Most of the readers would know that vegetables are a healthy diet for healthy life. But it is not true always! As the vegetables produced on the chemically contaminated sewage water lifted from the gutters next to the railway tracks, is more disease prone to human life than expecting it could improve human health.
The vegetables are produced on sewage water and after washing, they are sent to the market for sell.
Voicing his reservation, Sudhir Jadhav, a MNS corporator, tried to bring the matter to Municipal Corporation’s notice and also demanded to ban these vegetables from sell. But in vain the vegetables are hitting the market ahead of negligence from the Municipal Corporation.
The railway administration took this decision to plant vegetables on the land next to railway tracks to avoid the encroachment.
It is reported that various kind of vegetables were produced in this land. The land next to railway stations like Elphinston road, Dadar, Matunga road, Vile Parle, Jogeshwari, Goregaon, Parel, Curry Road, Chinchpokli, Vidya Vihar, Kanjur Marg, Sion, etc. is used to grow the vegetables.
But the sewage water contaminated by chemicals is used to water these vegetables.
Being injurious to human health, the contaminated water grown vegetables would damage human internal system.
When this correspondent contacted Dr. Arun Bamane, Executive Health Officer, Mumbai Municipal Corporation, he said, “The matter does not come under purview of Mumbai Municipal Corporation. After a resolution was passed in the Corporation general body meeting, the samples of the vegetables grown at Western, Central and harbor railway lands were sent to State government’s laboratory for the tests. But the observatory report from these laboratory did not mention that the vegetables were harmful or injurious,” he said.
