Cabinet approves Telangana as 29 state, uproar in Seemandhra
After Chiranjeevi, Pallam Raju resigns in displeasure over the decision
New Delhi: The union cabinet approved the decision for the creation of separate Telangana as the 29th state. Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde informed that a group of ministers (GoM) was assigned to complete the procedure.
It is termed that Hyderabad would be the capital of Telangana as well as of the Seemandhra for the span of 10 years. Shinde also informed that the GoM would go into special financial disbursement to Telangana.
Meanwhile, the cabinet decision has brought mixed reactions in parts of Andhra Pradesh.
Students unions and pro-Telangana parties welcomed the cabinet’s decision while supporters of united Seemandhra i.e. parts of Rayalseema and Andhra Pradesh, organized a complete shut down for 72 hours in Hyderbad and Seemandhra area in protest of the decision. Lawyer’s association in Hyderabad also declared a two day bandh in protest of the cabinet decision.
Even the union cabinet saw major drama over the formation of new state. K Chiranjeevi, Union Tourism Minister, faxed his resignation with displeasure over the decision. Chiranjeevi who hails from coastal Andhra, was under intense pressure in the region for united Andhra.
After Chiranjeevi Human Resource Development Minister M Pallam Raju resigned in wake of the separate Telangana state.
Brushing aside the Prime Minister’s advice, HRD Minister Pallam Raju today decided to resign from the Cabinet opposing the decision to split Andhra Pradesh.
He said, “Yesterday, I met the Prime Minister and offered to resign. He told me not to take a hasty decision. I have thought over it last night. I have decided that I should resign from the Union Council of Ministers,” he told reporters.
Raju, who hails from Seemandhra region, has been strongly opposed to the division of Andhra Pradesh and has been critical of the way the government was going about on the issue.
Meanwhile, there were reports that two Ministers of State, D Purandeshwari and Killi Kriparani, have also offered to resign but there was no confirmation.
Last night, Tourism Minister Chiranjeevi and Textiles Minister K S Rao had also offered their resignation.
