Diplomat’s father seeks intervention from Sonia Gandhi, calls his daughter is made ‘a scapegoat’

New Delhi: Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade’s father Uttam Khobragade, Ex-IAS officer said on Tuesday that his daughter is being made “a scapegoat” and he sought an intervention from UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi so as to get his daughter back.
Khobragade said, “It is the government who has sent my daughter. It is a political issue between these two countries and my daughter is being made a scapegoat,” he said.
It is reported that Devyani Khobragade, a senior Indian diplomat was strip-searched and was confined in a cell with drug addicts.
Talking with a news agency, Khobragade added that Even if she was arrested, she should have been treated with proper dignity. He expected that the UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi should intervene and get Devyani back to the country.
Being a father, Khobragade said that he was only concerned with the safety and liberty of his daughter and for that he would meet external affairs minister Salman Khurshid.
Devyani Khobragade, Deputy Consular General of India in New York, was charged last week with visa fraud, making false statements and exploiting her babysitter and housekeeper.
Earlier on Tuesday, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi, Union home minister Sushilkumar Shinde and Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi refused to meet a US Congressional delegation to highlight India’s strong disapproval of Devyani’s arrest in public.
