27 dead in Malshej Ghat bus accident; state govt announces help
ST bus travelling from Thane depot to Ahmednagar met with a fatal accident at Malshej Ghat
Kalyan: A State Transport (ST) bus travelling from Thane depot to Ahmednagar met with a fatal accident at Malshej Ghat on Thursday morning at around 9 am. In an attempt to miss a hit by the tempo on a dangerous turn, bus driver lost control and bus collapsed 100-150 feet down in the valley of Malshej. 37-40 passengers were travelling in a bus. 27 persons are dead in this mishap, the toll may increase, as per the reports.
As per the initial reports, accident took place near channel no 98. Around 15-20 people are injured and moved to the local hospital in Murbad. The arrangements to admit severe injured people at Thane Civil Hospital are under process, informed Murbad’s MP, Kisan Kathore. Medical help, local police, villagers and fire brigade has reached the location. Additional help of Thane Fire Brigade is on the way as informed by ST spokesperson. The Tempo driver is arrested as per the reports.
According to the local residents, this is the most severe accident that has taken place at Malshej Ghat where bus is broken into two parts.
The Ghat was closed for 7-8 days some months back as a cliff fall at channel number 98 killed some people. This accident took place at the same location.
State Government announces help to victims
The Chief Minister of Maharashtra Prithviraj Chavan has announced help of Rs 2 lakh to the families of dead and Rs 50 thousand to the injured persons in this mishap.
