Champion’s journey to World Snooker title via Engineering and MBA!
Arantxa Sanchis made her mark in World Snooker Championship
Mumbai: A qualified engineer and MBA from Pune, Arantxa Sanchis has made her mark in World Snooker Championship. She bagged a Gold Medal with Vidya Pillay from Chennai, in Women Doubles of Snooker 6 Red World Championship on 6th October at Carlow (Ireland). I feel proud to achieve this even after lesser practice, Arantxa told while speaking with ‘Prahaar’.
“I have respectable job in a bank. I have major responsibilities in office due to my qualification which gave me very less time to practice for the world championship. We practiced only for two weeks before the game and still could achieve the gold medal; it gives me a very proud feeling.” Arantxa said with excitement. She added, “I have given equal importance to academics and game since childhood. I always wanted to spark in both the fields”.
“World 6 Red was first time organized on international level. This pattern is like T-20 format of Cricket. We used to play in 15 Red format earlier but this new format excited us. Vidya is in her 30s’ so she is elder and more experienced than me. Her experience helped us a lot. We had a major challenge of Thailand against us in the finals. But I played without pressure with experienced Vidya. When I pushed Pink ball, our victory was almost in sight. This year I participated 4th time in an international game. So I didn’t want to keep any stone un-turned to win a medal.” She said. Her game is improving with time. Last year, she was the only woman from India to play in a professional Billiards competition in England.
Her inspiration was her father, Ex-Colonel in Military. “My father likes Snooker a lot. I started playing this game in leisure at the age of 16. I watched great Snooker players like Pankaj Advani; took inspiration from them and decided to make a mark in this game on international level.” Arantxa said and proudly added that I will take India’s name on top in this game in future.
