Former Union Minister Mohan Dharia passes away


Padmavibhushan Mohan Dharia died of old age on Monday morning

mohan-dhariaPune: Veteran freedom fighter, founder of ‘Vanrai’ and former Union Minister Padmavibhushan Mohan Dharia died of old age on Monday morning. He was 88.

He was suffering of kidney disease from last few days. He was also going through breathing problems and weakness. He was admitted to Puna Hospital for increased trouble and low blood pressure. He died at around 8am on Monday morning.

Nate in Mahad taluka was his native place. He shifted to Pune for higher education and took active participation in freedom fight here. He entered politics after getting his law degree. Dharia, of socialist thinking first entered in Praja Samajwadi party and later joined Congress.

He was the member of Pune Municipal Corporation between years 1956 to 1960. Later, he was elected as a Member of Parliament from Pune constituency. He worked in various important departments as State Minister for Central government. He was also given a position of Deputy Chairman of Planning Commission.

He retired from politics after losing election in 1980. After retirement, he started work of plantation in numerous villages and embankment project in agricultural fields for protecting environment. He was awarded with Padmavibhushan.
