School-ChildrenSindhudurg: The State Education Department has asked Sindhudurg Zila Parishad Education department to submit report on 697 primary schools in the district which have less than even 20 students on roll. The state department will take decision about closure of these schools after studying the report.

These schools include 671 schools from standard first to forth and rest 26 schools run till seventh standard. The list includes 353 schools which has less than 10 students on roll. The district has total 1476 primary schools, of which 697 schools may close down.

98 schools in Devgadh, 51 in Dodamarg, 112 in Kankavali, 100 in Kudal, 115 in Malvan, 102 in Sawantwadi, 61 in Vaibhavwadi and 58 schools in Vengurle have less than 20 students enrolled.

Education commission is opposing government’s act to close down schools. But the state government is planning to close them anyway and shift students and teachers in another school. The government is even planning to provide transportation charges. But final decision will be taken only after studying report to be submitted by district level education department.

The construction division had repaired some of these schools, new benches were also provided to some schools. Why they repaired the schools if they were planning to close them down? asked education commission members.
