UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi had also signaled disappointment over the apex court’s decision ruling the issue of gay rights.
The Congress chief also voiced optimism that the parliament would uphold the constitutional guarantee of life and liberty to all citizens including those who were directly going to get affected by the Supreme Court judgment.
Sonia Gandhi felt proud for the tolerant and inclusive culture of the country. She said, “We are proud that our culture has always been an inclusive and tolerant one.”
A bench of justices G S Singhvi and S J Mukhopadhaya set aside the Delhi High Court’s verdict which had in 2009 decriminalized gay sex among consenting adults in private.
The bench allowed the appeals filed by various social and religious organizations challenging the high court verdict on the ground that gay sex is against the cultural and religious values of the country.
