Indian TV shows are still backward, says Apurva Agnihotri
Mumbai : Actor Apurva Agnihotri says Hindi films have grown in respect of content, but television continues to be ruled by typical “backward” daily soaps.
Apurva, who has been a part of unconventional serial like “Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahi”, feels content today on TV has not much changed despite the medium possessing a huge potential.
“If you look at all the top shows they are typical. Our films have evolved but our (TV) shows are still quite backward. We are still making shows like we used to 15-20 years ago and we haven’t evolved at all, which is quite disheartening,” Apurva told PTI in an interview here.
“‘Jassi…’, ‘Balika Vadhu’, ‘Udaan’ are path breaking shows. Among hundreds shows, there are just three or four that are up there in terms of content. Rest are all reality shows such as music and dance shows,” he said.
The actor, who is also best remembered for his role in 1997 hit “Pardes”, said television has resurrected career of huge Bollywood stars like Amitabh Bachchan.
“The reach of television is so huge. To be very honest, television resurrected Mr Bachchan’s career. The best of Bollywood stars are doing television. Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan. The reach of TV is so wide that this is the right time to make a transition and give people something worthwhile to watch,” he said.
The 43-year-old actor has also been part of reality shows like “Big Boss”, said he prefers doing such shows as they are less time consuming assignments.
“I have been around on television but I have preferred doing reality shows because they get over fast and there is good money. You are not stuck slogging for 12 hours each day, 25 days a month for years and years. Reality shows are done with in about three months,” he added.
Apurva is currently seen in show “Saubhagyalakshmi” where he is playing a rich guy.
About his character in the new show, he says, “He is a man of few words. He doesn’t care for anything else but his work and family. He’s kind of a recluse and quite like I am in real life. Basically, a boring rich guy.”
The show is being aired on channel &TV from Monday to Friday at 8 PM.
