Inform about the vultures’ nests and win prizes!
Prize competition organized for the Gram Panchayats
The organization has come up with this scheme to create awareness about the endangered bird among the citizens. Those villages having vultures’ nests will be named as ‘Vulture secured village’ and the village which would have maximum nests of the bird will be declared as a winner with Rs 50,000 award.
The scheme is scheduled for villages of Ratnagiri, Raigad and Sindhudurg districts. Sahyadri Nisarg Mitra Mandal is also organizing a save vulture campaign in Anjarle of Ratnagiri district and at Shrivardhan, Chirgaon and Nanemachi of Raigad district with the help of Premsagar Mistri, Ciscamp Mahad along with local villagers.
The organizers have declared that those individuals who will inform about the vulture nests would be awarded Rs 1000. Not only that the Sahyadri Nisarg Mitra Mandal has organized a vulture conservation competition in which the highest prize would be of Rs 50,000.
Vultures are known as scavengers in the ecosystem. There is a gradual decrease in the number of this prey eating bird by 97%. The reason for the decrease of the numbers is a chemical diclonefenac, a pain killer medicine injected to the cattle. The vultures die by consuming the flesh of these dead cattle. Thus the medicine has been banned.
The save vulture campaign started in the year 2003. Many a times the vultures build their nests on coconut trees and their stool causes harm to the coconut plant. Thus farmers remove the nests. Considering the fact, the state government has declared to provide Rs 400 as compensation per plant.
Those who are interested to inform about the vultures nests should contact on 02355-253030, a statement said.
