Thane: Thane Deputy Mayor and district BJP chief Milind Patankar tendered his resignation as Deputy Mayor here today, after being held captive and surrounded by an irate mob of Shiv Sena and BJP workers for more than four hours in his office.

The high pitched drama in the civic headquarters was the result of transport committee member Ajay Joshi defecting from the BJP to the NCP-Congress camp who voted the rebel Sena nominee Sailesh Bhagat to the office of the Chairman of the TMT Committee.

Patankar was targeted by the Sena and BJP since Joshi is considered close to Patankar and it was alleged throughout the drama that Patankar had deceived his partymen even in past elections.

They alleged that he had a dealing with the NCP State Executive President and the MLA Jitendra Bunty Awhad on account of which he created problems in BJP and the Sena circles here.

Meanwhile, the NCP camp was overjoyed, since the party had snatched away the TMT Committee from the Sena-BJP combine and this is seen as the beginning of the paty’s inroads into other committees.

Patankar was removed out of corporation premises under police protection and security has also been provided at his residence, sources said.

Irked partymen attack TMC Deputy Mayor on Sena nominee defeat
