KrishnakumarNashik: In a shock to the students, faculties and friends of Dr. R. Krishnakumar, Vice Chancellor, Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University, the visionary in the distance learning education has died, here this morning.

Krishnakumar, aged 52, is survived by his mother, wife, two daughters and a son-in-law.  Dr. Krishnakumar joined as a Vice-Chancellor of Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University (YCMU) on 4th March 2010. Dr. Krishnakumar was a PhD in Physics. Earlier he had worked as a popular principal among the student at Dr. Ambedkar College, Nagpur. He had also served as a director at Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj University Colleges and University Grants Commission. Earlier Kumar had served as a Special Secretary to the governors of Kerala and Bihar.

He was later posted as General Secretary of Association of Indian Universities, the union of 450 universities in the country. During his tenure, Dr. Kumar had presented 14 research papers at national and international level conferences.

Being a scholar, Dr. Kumar was keen to apply his knowledge for the betterment of the deprived factors of society. While doing that he had to face many troubles in his professional life. He was honored with Ideal Teacher Award, Maharshi Valmiki National Award, Bihar Education Aaward, Bihar Gourav Award and with other noted awards.

With his zeal, discipline and love and care for the institutions, Dr. Krishnakumar had registered a mark through his work wherever he was posted in his tenure.

In last four years at YCMU, Dr R Krishnakumar had given preference for the vocational education. He started innovative educational programs so that education should reach to the individual in society.

In association with the government of Maharashtra, YCMU had initiated a certificate course in Water Management so as to overcome the famine and water scarcity situation in the state. This lone example gives clear idea Dr. Krishnakumar’s vision and sheer dedication.

The were Dr. Krishnakumar’s enunciating efforts that developed Yashwani Web Radio, an online web radio to provide and spread the necessary knowledge for the students.

Not only that, with a motive to educate the citizens of rural and tribal area with basic information about health, reading and writing sessions, etc. were developed and given through Yash Nirman project and the open university adopted Bombalitek, Savargaon, Ladchi and Chintamanwadi villages and contributed for the education and confidence building with the changing world, among the villagers.

He made it a point to motivate the use of modern technology at the university work procedure to boost the speed and accuracy in it.

Various MoUs along with tie ups with educational as well as industries were taken place during Dr. Krishnakumar’s tenure as a Vice-Chancellor.

Dr. Kumar made it a point to bring the YCMU on international frontiers. Thus YCMU had special tie-ups with Open University in UK, the mother of International Open University, along with universities based in Canada and Sri Lanka. Recently YCMU had an educational pact to provide educational opportunities to the non resident Indians in Malaysia with the help of Education Consultant India pvt ltd.

In his press release, Dr. Prakash Atkare, Registrar, Yashwantrao Chavan Open University, stated that it was Dr. Krishnakumar’s dedication, loyalty and discipline that the university could bring the downtrodden people into the educational flow.

Noting his personal experiences, Atkare said, “It was in his persona to work in stipulated time and accurate and quick decision taking ability that he could bring change and gave direction to the brighter way for the university,” he said.
