More area under Coconut cultivation in Konkan
Coconut cultivation in Konkan has got boost from the time Employment Assurance Scheme was introduced in the region
Ratnagiri: Coconut cultivation in Konkan has got boost from the time Employment Assurance Scheme was introduced in the region. Since last 22 years, within the four districts of Konkan a hefty increase of 17 thousand hector area is observed for coconut cultivation and presently 35 thousand hector area is under cultivation of coconuts, informed Vice-president of Coconut Board Rajabhau Limaye in a press conference. He also informed that around 38 thousand hector area is under coconut cultivation in entire district.
The coconut farming was very limited in Konkan before 1990. During that time, 1,507 hector area in Thane, 2,635 hector areas in Raigad, 2,922 hector areas in Ratnagiri and 8, 243 hector areas in Sindhudurg was under cultivation. In 1990, Employment Assurance Scheme was implemented in the region which positively affected the coconut cultivation and the area expanded by 17, 253 hector
The expansion of 2,257 hector in Thane, 3,434 hector in Raigad, 3,090 hector in Ratnagiri and the most 8,472 hector area is observed in last 22 years, informed Limaye. This makes Sindhudurg a leader in coconut cultivation.
16 groups are given new approvals
16 new groups; 8 from Guhagar taluka and 8 from Thane district are given approval by Coconut Board. Here 46, 860 new coconut plants would be cultivated on 291 hector area having 909 beneficiaries.
