MSRTC on way to privatization
One of the most popular and preferred mode of transport, ST buses, are soon to undergo privatization as per MSRTC’s new policies
Kudal: One of the most popular and preferred mode of transport, ST buses, are soon to undergo privatization as per MSRTC’s new policies. Very soon, private buses will be departing from ST bus depots but decision on their fare is yet pending.
Apparently new bus fares of private buses will not be as affordable for commuters as ST buses. Surprisingly no protest from drivers is yet seen in this case of privatization.
ST bus service plays significant role especially in rural transport. At times they face losses to bring innovative schemes to offer affordable transport. But they still have to keep introducing such schemes as Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) is headed by the government. They are now going towards privatization.
Private bus owners at benefit
Currently private owned AC Shivneri bus service runs within Mumbai, Pune and Panji. A similar policy will be executed on rural roads. Private buses will be painted in ST bus colors. ST will also be bearing cost of diesel to be required by these private buses. Nothing is yet clear about ticket fares which will undoubtedly be carrying burden of these extra expenses.
Drivers may lose jobs
Private bus owners will appoint their own drivers on buses; ST will only have cleaners on the vehicle. So the number of drivers may get cut off. Some reservation buses may not need even cleaner on board. So reduction of personnel in MSRTC may be seen in near future. MSRTC is taking steps towards this privatization in pace.
