NCP workers protest hike in MEP of onions
Nashik (Maha): Activist of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) on thursday protested against the hike in minimum export price (MEP) fixed by the Centre on export of onions.
They staged protest by blocking the Mumbai-Agra National highway and Nashik-Pune highway and also held demonstrations at several places in the district, NCP district president Ravindra Pagar said.
“This agitation will be intensified till the government does not scrap the minimum export price for the onions”, Pagar said.
He said that NCP Chief Sharad Pawar when he was Union Agriculture Minister in 2014 had removed the MEP on onion in the interest of the farmers.
“However, the Modi government at the centre has changed this and has fixed the MEP to USD 425 per Metric tonne”,he alleged.
To prevent spike in onion prices in the coming days due to supply shortage, the government has already increased the minimum export price of the commodity to USD 425 per tonne and is also planning to import some quantities of onions to boost domestic availability.
