Sindhudurg: The Department of Commerce and Cooperation has started working towards modernization of weekly markets in the district under Maharashtra Agriculture Competitiveness Project. The Government of Maharashtra has agreed to provide funds of Rs 22.50 lakh for this project. Also Grampanchayat will raise Rs 2.5 lakh from public contribution. The Department is looking forward to face this challenging task. A culture and lifestyle lover of Sindhudurg, Agro commerce expert Amit Sonawane is striving hard to start modern weekly market here.
A new market will be provided basic facilities like pedestrian paths, sitting with sheds for vendors, drinking water, garbage pits, power supply, toilets and fencing etc. Grampanchayat needs to own at least one acre land for this market. This weekly market has to be put up in a campus of Grampanchayt and has to benefit at least five to ten villages. Farmers will be able to earn good price for their products here. Better service will attract more visitors to this market.
This advanced market will benefit Grampanchayats as well. Vendors will be safeguarded from rain and heat. Vendors have to secure their place by registering in advance. Appropriate care will be taken while constructing this market to ensure hygiene.
The Department of Commerce and Cooperation aims to create good platform for agricultural products. Hence, farmers practicing particularly in the district will be given preference.
This modern weekly market will also create plenty of job opportunities. Grampanchayat will collect fair revenue from vendors. Also, good rates to agricultural products will improve farmers’ financial conditions. The work for these modern markets is already undergoing in two phases; third phase will soon begin in Sindhudurg.
