Alibaug: Such was the impact of the Narendra Modi wave this elections that the Peasants and Workers Party (PWP), which traditionally holds sway in Raigad Lok Sabha constituency in coastal Maharashtra, was relegated to third position.
This was only for the first time in the history of PWP since its inception that its nominee has lost his deposit.
PWP candidate Rameshbhai Kadam came third after Anant Gite of Shiv Sena and NCP stalwart Sunil Tatkare.
In Lok Sabha elections held in the constituency, Congress has won eight times while PWP has represented the seat six times.
Gite has retained the seat in a close contest with Tatkare and managed to scrape through with a margin of 2110 votes.
In year 1996, Datta Patil of PWP had finished third.
Kadam polled 129730 votes as against 161404 votes required to stay afloat.
