‘Queen’s Necklace’ to dazzle more
BMC has decided to start asphalting work at some parts of the ‘Queen’s Necklace’
Mumbai: The cement-concrete road of Marine Drive, popularly known as ‘Queen’s Necklace’, sustained for 73 long years. Now the BMC has decided to start asphalting work at some parts of it. The ‘Mechanized Mastic’ will be give polished and shiny look to the Marine Drive. Along with this, contractors for cement-concreting and beautification of dividers are also selected. This work is assigned to RP Shah’s RPS Infraproject Company which is defamed for corruption in BMC.
But in Mumbai, only RPS Company uses Mechanized Mastic. So the contract of Rs 71 crore was awarded to them on these terms by Corporation with leading party’s support.
Marine Drive is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Mumbai. Though the cement-concrete road of the curve is near its Platinum jubilee, it is in deteriorating condition now. Hence, the Corporation has decided to dig this road and do the mechanized mastic’s coating on it. The work may take time to complete as this route from NCPA to Tambe square is used by VIPs and VVIPs regularly.
As per the guidelines of Standing Technical Advisory Committee (STAC) the road between Madam Kama Road to NCPA will be of cement-concrete and 3.93 km road of rest 4.50 km will be mechanized asphalted.
The proposal for Marine Drive road’s up-gradation was approved in Standing Committee’s meeting. But the eyebrows are raised on the support from leaders to the company like RPS which is looting the Corporation for years.
73 years legacy
The Netaji Subhash Road, commonly known as Marine Drive is a popular tourist place in Mumbai which also has a legacy of 73 years. The Construction of this road started pre-Second World War in 1935. The work of this 4.5 km road was completed almost five years later in 1940.

The company will keep eye on the construction work and material being used for the work in town, as well as Eastern and Western suburbs of Mumbai.
