Ratnagiri faces threats of landslides

Ratnagiri: According to the survey report on landslides risk during rainy season, prepared by Tahsildars, 16 places are identified as dangerous in the district. Temporary preventive measures are implemented on these risk bearing places.
Four years back, heavy rains had brought up the risk of landslides; when places like Ratnagiri, Dapoli, Mandangad, Khed, Lanja and Rajapur faced severe incidences of landslides. These incidences include burying of complete family under hill slide in Rajapur, landslide on 10 feet road in Ratnagiri; the problem has become severe in some places like Nivsar, Asode etc besides above mentioned places.
The special committee was appointed by Pune department of Central Government’s Geological Survey of India to study this problem. The committee contacted Ratnagiri administration which instructed Tahsildars of respective talukas to survey their villages, study landslide threat possibilities and present primary report to the committee.
As instructed, tahsildars presented village name vise list to district administration which helped to identify 16 places with the risk of landslides.
These places include Umbershet in Dapoli, Kolbandar in Dabhol, Kondgaon-Haveli in Mandangad, Kuduk Khurd, Kolambe in Ratnagiri, Chindravali, Chanderai, Sangameshwar Rampeth, Khopi Ramjiwadi in Khed, Niwsar in Lanja, Khorninko, Asode, Hasol-Gafalwadi in Rajapur, Shivani Budurk and Wadal-Hasaul.
Safety walls have been built at some of these places as temporary preventive measure.
