Maharashtra government has waived outstanding electricity bills of Rs 73.67 lakh, pending against 43,637 farmers under the MSEDCL, Nashik zone
Nashik: In a relief to hailstorm-affected farmers in the district, the Maharashtra government has waived outstanding electricity bills of Rs 73.67 lakh, pending against 43,637 farmers under the MSEDCL, Nashik zone.
The order in this connection was received here yesterday, revenue department officials said yesterday.
The state government’s decision came after the Bombay High Court order on March 21, stopping recovery of bill amount from hailstorm-hit farmers in Maharashtra, officials added.
Unseasonal rains and hailstorm in February and March, had adversely affected standing crops on 10,32,024 hectares of land in 802 villages of 13 tehsils in the district. Villages in Niphad, Malegaon and Satana tehsils were the worst hit.
According to sources, MSEDCL was pressurizing farmers to repay their bills and also disconnected power supply to homes of defaulters. But later, farmers claimed that they were unable to pay pending bills owing to heavy losses incurred due to crop losses.
