Sensex falls 83 points, rupee down 23 paise in early trade
BSE Sensex fell over 83 points and rupee lost 23 paise to 62.43 against the dollar in early trade today
The 30-share barometer declined by 83.42 points, or 0.40 per cent, to 20,639.55. The index had gained almost 530 points in the last four sessions with metals, banking, power and capital goods sector stocks leading the fall.
Similarly, the National Stock Exchange index Nifty moved down by 32.15 points, or 0.62 per cent, to 6,120.60.
Brokers said besides profit-booking by participants after four sessions of gains, a weak trend in the overseas markets as weak economic data from the US, Japan and China dented investor confidence, mainly influenced the trading sentiments here.
Among other Asian markets, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index fell 0.30 per cent while Japan’s Nikkei was down 1.68 per cent in early trade today.
The US Dow Jones Industrial Average ended 0.56 per cent lower in its previous session.
Rupee down 23 paise Vs dollar in early trade
The rupee lost 23 paise to 62.43 against the dollar in early trade today at the Interbank Foreign Exchange market due to increased demand for the American currency from importers.
Forex dealers said a weak opening in the domestic stock market also put pressure on the local currency but dollar’s weakness against other currencies limited the fall.
The domestic currency had lost 36 paise, its biggest loss in three weeks, to close at 62.20 versus the dollar on Tuesday. The forex and money markets remained closed yesterday on account of “Chhatrapati Maharaj Jayanti”.
Meanwhile, the benchmark BSE Sensex was down 83.42 points, or 0.40 per cent, at 20,639.55 in early trade today.
