Siddaramaiah targets Irani and Dattatreya for Vemula’s suicide
Bengaluru : Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah today targeted Union Ministers Smriti Irani and Bandaru Dattatreya over the suicide of research scholar Rohith Vemula of Hyderabad University, alleging that such a “condition” was created by them.
“Central Minister Badaru Dattatreya and concerned (HRD) minister Smriti Irani are responsible for the suicide of Dalit scholar Vemula because they were the ones who created such a condition,” he told reporters here.
Siddaramaiah alleged that Vemula committed suicide after the HRD Ministry wrote letters to Hyderabad University.
The HRD Ministry had written as many as five letters to the university after receiving a complaint from Dattatreya alleging anti-national activities in the campus and the violent attack on an ABVP leader.
However, the Ministry has been maintaining that it followed the standard practice by writing to the university, seeking its response on issues raised by Dattatreya to be examined and facts intimated.
