Supreme Court puts stay on release of Rajiv Gandhi assassins
The Supreme Court has put stay on the release of Rajiv Gandhi’s assassins today
The Central Government had moved to the SC against The Tamil Nadu government’s decision to release culprits Nalini, Robert Pious, Jayakumar and Ravichandran who are undergoing life sentence for their role in the assassination of Gandhi on May 21, 1991 in Sriperumbudur.
The Supreme Court has indicated that there have been procedural lapses by the TN government in its decision to release seven convicts in Rajiv Gandhi assassination case and issued notices to the Tamil Nadu government and all the convicts.
The apex court has asked the state government to file reply to the notice within two weeks and has posted the case for hearing for March 6.
The Supreme Court agrees that appropriate government has power to remit sentence but informed that it has to follow the laid down procedure for it.
