Decreasing yield, increasing debts, diminishing economic level has frustrated the fisherman youth and has created a new trouble in front of these youth

FishermanMumbai: As the times things are changing, youth from fishermen families who take their ancestral business on their shoulders are facing one big problem. These fishermen youth are not getting the brides! Yes, you thought it right, to be brides are strongly rejecting the fishermen youth from life time companionship.

Thus many of the youth are thinking to quite their traditional business. The traditional fishing business is facing the heat because of the water population, fishing with modern equipment, vanishing trees near the seashores, etc.

It has shown adverse effects on the fishing business. Decreasing yield, increasing debts, diminishing economic level has frustrated the fisherman youth and has created a new trouble in front of these youth.

“Girls from fisherman community are rejecting the youth who are into fishing business. These girls more prefer the youths who have jobs from the community. Thus many of the youth are struggling to get married in the community,” said, Mahesh Tandel, chief, Maharashtra Fishermen Development Organization.

The increasing sea pollution has made the fish near the shores vanish. In addition to that the Tivara trees near the shores are cut because of construction. Thus the possibility of getting a good catch near the shores has decreased positively.

Besides the fishermen who go into deep sea for fishing, return only after the month. Tandel said that the month long search for the particular fish variety does not guarantee a good catch and the quality of the fish has also decreased.

The average daily income to the small boat fisherman is Rs 200 and those who have big boats, get Rs 500 a day. But its unpredictable that each day they would get fish.

Thus the percentage of debt is increasing among the youth. Tandel said that thus from past few years the girls from fishing community prefer the well educated youth with a job from their community. Thus he said that the youth from the fisherman community is leaving the traditional business.
