Tribal woman gangraped in MP village; six arrested
Shivpuri (MP): A 40-year-old tribal woman, accused of practising witchcraft, was allegedly brutally tortured and gangraped by six persons at Kemrara village in the district, police said today.
The woman, who was gangraped for three days, is in a critical condition and is being treated at a hospital in Gwalior district, police said, adding, that all the six accused have been arrested.
Kemrara village, which lies around 55 kms from Shivpuri, falls under Govardhan police station area.
“The village houses two settlements of tribals and the victim used to live in one of these settlements. However, for the past two months, her husband has been working in Gujarat as a labourer, while she lived with her six-year-old daughter in the village,” Area Sub Divisional Officer of Police (SDOP) Ramraj Singh Tomar told reporters.
A few days back, accusing the woman of practising witchcraft, residents of Kemrara threw her out of the village.
Ever since, the victim had been living in a thatched hut outside the village, Tomar added.
“On May 29, the accused persons came to her hut, tied her and took her to the village. Then they kept her captive at one of the accused Janved’s house. They tortured and gangraped her repeatedly between May 29 to May 31. They even inserted an iron rod into her private parts,” the SDOP said.
When the woman’s condition turned critical, the accused persons left her and escaped.
Tomar said the villagers informed the police about the incident this morning, following which police officials reached the spot and the accused were arrested.
“The woman was brought to the district hospital this morning in a critical condition. She was then referred to Gwalior district for better medical treatment,” he said.
The six accused, who belong to a tribal community, have been arrested and booked under sections 376 (2) (g) (gangrape), 346 (wrongful confinement) and other relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
They have been identified as Choukidar Adivasi, Somwatia Adivasi, Ramdayal Adivasi, Kakku Adivasi, Omkar Adivasi and Janved Adivasi, Tomar said, adding, the matter is being investigated.
