Two injured in agitation for better sugarcane purchase price in Sangli

sugarcaneSangli: Two persons were injured in a stone throwing incident by agitators demanding better purchase price for sugarcane crop here, police said today.

During a bandh called by the Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghathana (SSS) in Sangli and Kolhapur districts, the agitators including SSS activists yesterday blocked roads, burnt tyres and damaged six state transport buses by pelting them with stones.

In the protest, a bus driver and  a conductor were injured at Wasagade town near Sangli, police said. No one has been arrested so far in this connection, they added.

Though the crushing has started in other parts of Maharashtra, sugar mills from Kolhapur-Sangli region have not been able to begin operations as farmers have been demanding a better purchase price this season.
