Water pipeline bursts in Thane, huts submerged
Thane: A water pipeline passing through the Thane city burst on saturday, submerging several huts in Kisan Nagar locality, officials said.
Fire Brigade and disaster management personnel immediately swung into action and launched an operation to rescue marooned people.
There was no loss of life, but several people, including women and children, were moved to safer places, Fire Brigade sources said, adding at least 15 hutments collapsed or suffered damage.
The pipeline, which carries water to Mumbai, was found damaged at around 2.45 pm near a slum locality in Kisan Nagar, Santosh Kadam, Thane chief of Regional Disaster Management Control (RDMC), said.
The entire area was waterlogged and several huts were submerged, he said.
Thane Guardian Minister Eknath Shinde, who is a resident of Kisan Nagar, visited the affected area and supervised the rescue operation.
Efforts were on to repair the pipeline.
