Widening Kopari bridge delays due to Railway approvals
Kopari bridge faces obstacle in completing bridge due to delayed non-approval from Railway authority
Thane: A widening work of Kopari Bridge on Eastern Express Highway is stalled for last 10 years for the approvals from Railway. The road near toll booth in this area is also going through widening process which may cause traffic congestion. Therefore, the demand is increasing that Municipal Corporation should pursue this issue with railway authorities and resolve it forever.
The existing bridge of British era connects East and West sides of Thane. This bridge has passed its expiry period and it is also insufficient for increasing traffic; hence Thane Municipality decided to build a parallel bridge to it. But even this bridge faces traffic problems. There is an Express way from Anandnagar Toll booth to Ghodbandar. This route too is always congested with traffic. State Road Development authority has started the work on a flyover at Kapurbawadi to deal with it.
The campaign to widen this road near Anandnagar toll booth is undertaken considering increase in the number of vehicles in future. The traffic of highway might get converted towards the Kopari Bridge. This will no doubt overburden a new bridge constructed by municipality. An alert citizen Nilesh Ambekar could sense this problem and did regular follow-up with corporation for old road widening plan. Corporation asked for 10 year old approval during this follow-up only to realize that Railway authorities have not given approvals.
Cost of new bridge doubles
The Corporation built new bridge parallel to old British era bridge as now it is dilapidated. The deadline of 4 years was given for its completion. But actually it took 8 years. Earlier cost of this bridge was 2 crore which has gone to Rs 4 crore due to delay. Corporation should take strict actions to avoid this situation in widening old roads.
