‘Will discuss BPT land use for Harbour line expansion with CM’
Mumbai: Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu today said that he will discuss with the state CM about a proposal on utilising Bombay Port Trust (BPT) land for the expansion of Harbour railway line.
Prabhu said he would meet Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to discuss about the utilisation of BPT land for the expansion of Harbour line.
“Upgradation of Mumbai infrastructure is the responsibility of not just state government but also of Central government,” he said.
The Harbour Line is a branch line of suburban railway operated by Central Railways.
Prabhu also stressed on the use of technology to provide better services to the commuters.
“Out of 2.7 crore people who use railways daily, 75 to 80 lakh commuters are in Mumbai alone. We need to focus on providing the commuters better (service) using technology,” Prabhu said after inaugurating a mobile ticketing system for Mumbai suburban passengers at Dadar station here.
The minister said 90 crore people in the country use mobile phones and the endeavour of the railways is to ensure that technology is used to make travel simpler without hurdles.
Under mobile ticketing system, an application needs to be downloaded for smartphones.
After registration, a unique login ID and password is given and following other steps, a booking can be done.
Prabhu said a grievance redressal system helpline and a customer care portal will be launched soon.
“I have asked railway authorities to study how international airlines use grievance tracking system online and implement the system on Indian Railways,” he said.
The minister said railway authorities will coordinate with their civic counterparts in various cities for implementing a cleanliness drive of railway stations and also of areas under their respective jurisdiction.
